“The Sanctuary” explores the fragility of water landscapes in the face of human intervention and the spatial memory that is lost along with this fragility. Lakes, wetlands, and watersheds are not only the bearers of ecological systems but also of cultural identities and collective memory. Natural bodies of water, such as Lake Terkos in northwestern Istanbul, face the risk of losing their identities and ecological balances under the pressure of large-scale infrastructure projects and urbanization.This project brings to light the relationship between water, space, memory, and power; it questions the forms of domination over nature in the processes of dividing, shrinking, and reorganizing water resources. Documenting how these areas—once “sanctuaries”—have become fragile, vulnerable to intervention, and exploitable spaces, Sanctuary offers a new perspective on ecological justice and the loss of memory.
